Playing Favorites.

On the list of BEDS topics, the first few are about our favorite things. Since I like common themes and I didn't use any of those topics on those days, I'm going the first five prompts.

Your favorite song
My love of music is far too expansive for me to only pick one favorite, so here are three: Only the Good Die Young by Billy Joel; The Middle by Jimmy Eat World; Keep Breathing by Ingrid Michaelson.

Your favorite movie
I'll list my top five, just for kicks -- Ferris Bueller's Day Off; Dirty Dancing; Grease; Anchorman; Centerstage.

Your favorite television program

So You Think You Can Dance?

Your favorite book
It's a tie between the Harry Potter series (if I had to pick a favorite, I'd go with Deathly Hallows) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Your favorite quote
"Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." -- Ferris Bueller

Share some of your favorites in the comments - pick one or answer them all! I'm curious.

mixed shots, harry potter, and bocce ball.

This past weekend was an absolute whirlwind, and since I haven't really talked much about what I've been up to lately, I decided I'd post a pretty little recap of the weekend's festivities.

During the week, E told me his friends were having a party on Friday night and I decided there'd be no harm in going, since I didn't have any other plans and the hostess lived close by. About a half hour after I arrived, the drinking games began and by the end of the night, I was borderline-drunk (which is as drunk as I allow myself to get). I blame E's friends for being mightily persuasive, but I think I was also trying to show E that I could loosen up and have a good time. (Not that I believe I have to drink to have a good time, it's just that I usually want to drink but tend to worry so much about how much I'm drinking, how I feel, how I'm going to feel, etc., that I don't relax and enjoy myself.)

The party was a lot of fun and I actually enjoyed being almost-drunk -- it really did release the firm grip that my inhibitions and worries have on me. However, when it was time for bed, I started feeling gross. Thankfully laying down and closing my eyes made me feel better, but I couldn't actually fall asleep. First it was because E and I were trying (and completely failing) to share a sofa, then it was because I kept having to pee, and finally it was because I relocated to the loveseat and couldn't stretch my legs. I managed about two hours of sleep overall.

Getting up on Saturday was not fun. At first I thought I was alright, but the combination of not sleeping and having a slight hangover made the drive home unbearable. Luckily a shower and some breakfast helped, then it was off to meet up with Natalie and her friends to see Deathly Hallows Part II. We waited in line for about an hour before they let us in the theater, which wasn't bad at all. The movie was FANTASTIC. I could go on for days, but I'll just say I loved the kiss, I fucking loved Neville, and I cried for the entire second half of the film, especially during the part about Snape. After the movie we went out for dinner then back to Natalie's apartment for a bit before heading home.

On Sunday I drove up to E's town to hang out at his friend's house with his group of friends. I arrived just as the women's World Cup was ending, after which we headed out into the backyard. E and his friends are all about playing yard games, so first they played a few rounds of Kan Jam, then we all played bocce ball before dinner was served. After dinner, a few people had left and it was down to E's core friends, me, and another of the girlfriends. The boys played a short game of Ultimate Frisbee while us girls sat on the sidelines -- I actually brought The Hunger Games to start reading, but I barely got half a chapter in before the boys were done. E and I left soon after, hung out at his place for a few hours, and then it was time for me to go.

It was the first time in a long time that I had so many plans back-to-back, and it was absolutely exhausting. Still, it was completely worth it.

a quiet weekend.

This weekend was a relaxing one for me, considering I had a busy end to my week last week and I know the upcoming week and weekend will be just as busy. Still, the weekend flew by and now there are just three days until Thanksgiving and the beginning of the weekends’ festivities.

On Thursday, I took my first holiday-season trip to the mall and Target. There’s something about the mall I love – I guess that’s a Jersey thing – and it’s even better during the Christmas season, especially when it’s not super crowded. I had a few stores I needed to stop in, the most important of which was The Gap to use my Groupon. I picked up some new tops to wear with leggings, then bought a bunch of gifts from The Body Shop and a few things at Victoria’s Secret.

Friday was, of course, the premiere of Deathly Hallows. I made last-minute plans with Natalie to see it at 5:30pm, which was the best decision ever. Even though we got there ten minutes before it started, we still got our (reserved) tickets and there were plenty of seats available. I found this was much better than reserving tickets for a later show only to have to get there early and wait in line for good seats, which is what a large number of teenagers had done.

The movie was amaze-balls. I could go on and on – mostly about all the little swoony moments between Ron and Hermione (one ship!) and the best-friend-y dance between Harry and Hermione – but I’ll refrain. Honestly, though, I’m dying to see it again. Also, I’ve decided that no matter what, I’m going to the midnight premiere of Part II. SO EXCITED.

After the movie, we stopped at Dunkin on the way back to Natalie’s apartment, where we proceed to watch trashy television with her fiancĂ© (OMG I LOVE SAYING THAT). Of course, I could’ve done without the extra hour I spent stuck in the biggest clusterfuck of traffic I've ever seen on the way home. The construction geniuses of New Jersey decided it was perfectly fine to do roadwork directly behind a toll plaza, diverting eleven lanes of traffic into one. So much rage. The only plus is that a few radio stations are already playing Christmas music, so that helped.

My weekend was calm and cozy, just as I’d planned. I slept late both days, organized some things in my room on Saturday night, and on Sunday I watched football (last-seconds awesome win for the Jets, loss for the Giants), the AMAs, and did a bunch of random chores. It flew by just the same, but I feel prepared for the hustle and bustle of the upcoming week.

how harry potter revealed my inner geek.

My collection
{via}

I don’t remember exactly when I first picked up a Harry Potter book – the first of the series came out when I was just beginning middle school, and I’m sure I wasn’t getting into it that early. I do know that by high school, I had at least some interest, and that the release of the first movie that year launched me into my first-ever fandom.

Never in my life had I nerded out over anything. After splitting my personality between ‘cool kid’ and ‘G&T student’ in middle school, the former part of me drifted away as I embraced my social awkwardness, shyness, and tendency to obsess over things. As a freshman in high school, I befriended a group of people who were extremely intelligent and half of whom were very interested in literature, which only served as encouragement to become enthralled with a book series.

It was with these girls that I began to love Harry Potter. I remember driving to the movies nearly right after school in senior year – stopping at home only to change into regular clothes – to see the release of the third movie. In July of the summer between high school and college, we waited in line at the midnight release of the sixth book. Even once we had all gone our separate ways in college, we met up to see the fifth movie, enthusiastic as ever.

As luck would have it, or maybe circumstance, the friends I made in college also had an affinity for the series. It helped that I was drawn to those people; I found that if they, too, had a certain love for the series, then they were my type of people. It was comforting, in a way.

One of my most cherished memories is going to see the fourth movie at the end of the fall semester in freshman year. The friends I had made and I planned to see the movie the night it came out, and Katie, my roommate at the time, invited a classmate of hers. Spoiler alert: that mystery classmate turned out to be Melissa, we hit it off immediately, and she’s now one of my closest friends. All thanks to Harry Potter. (That’s not dramatic at all. You know what is dramatic, though? This picture.)

This photo will never not amuse me. And I mean, seriously, we knew each other for maybe a half hour at this point.

The excitement I have for the final set of movies is indescribable, but at the same time, I am incredibly sad to see it end. It means no more anticipation, no more waiting outside of a Barnes and Noble at midnight or pre-ordering tickets weeks in advance, filling theaters with gaggles of costumed audience members. It also means that one more piece of my adolescence is being tucked away, only to be rehashed in occasional references by friends and weekend-long movie marathons.

But two things are for sure – one, that I’ll always remember the message of the books, that love is the most powerful thing in the world; and two, whenever I hear the first notes of the movie’s theme song play, I will not be able to stop a smile from crossing my face.

bullet lists, how i love thee.

  • Sometimes I have a dream I love so much that it keeps me happy for the rest of the day. Like, I'll just stop what I'm doing and remember it and it brings a smile to my face. This probably means I'm a humongous weirdo.

  • I'm preparing a post about how I haven't carved a pumpkin since I was like, ten and how I don't think I've ever actually set foot in a pumpkin patch. I feel supremely deprived, which is why I'm finally getting a pumpkin (from Shoprite).

  • While Ash, Cort and I were waiting for the dancers after the So You Think You Can Dance show the other weekend, we discussed the discrepancy over what you call a store where you purchase food. The three of us call it a "food store" and say we're going "food shopping," but apparently most(?) people say "grocery store" and "grocery shopping." It was interesting to talk about because 1) I never realized people really said groceries and 2) now that I think about it, calling it the food store sounds really weird.

  • Reading my way through the Harry Potter series for the second time is really weird. Most of Prisoner of Azkaban was hard to get through because they demonize Sirius Black, but it was worth it once I got to the moment when Harry finds out who he is.

  • Speaking of which, I am seriously going to lose my shit when I go to see the first part of Deathly Hallows next month. Every time they show a commercial, I stop everything and watch intently, and then I'm overcome with excitement. I really should hurry up to make plans and figure out who wants to go see it with me. (Any takers? I'm looking at you, Melissa... I mean, we met over Harry Potter, I feel like we're destined to see it together.)

  • I'm already Christmas shopping, and I'm equal parts proud of and disgusted at myself for thinking about it this early. Methinks I'll go with something homemade this year for at least part of everyone's gift considering I don't have the biggest budget. I also need to get started on making cards because I want to make them fancier than last year (as if anybody really cares about the details except me).

whirlwind end of summer (including tons of baking).

I have been running nonstop for the past couple of weeks. First it was the Labor Day weekend block party, then I was sick as a dog for the entire week. The following weekend was MusicFest and I spent most of the two days out of the house. On Monday might my mom headed over to my aunt's house to play nurse because my aunt was having surgery, not returning home until Thursday afternoon.

Apricot bars my mom and I made for my aunt.

For those four days, I had to play house - clean, grocery shop, prepare my own meals and make sure my dad and brother were taken care of, and other random chores. Not that I minded, because I adore doing all those things, but keeping tabs on my brother is handful and both he and my dad get needy when my mom's not around. My dad likes to talk to me more, bug me about random things... basically, he acts like a lost puppy with nobody to bother. My brother gets the same way, though he's less annoying and is someone who I can go to and gripe about my dad. Still, it's a big energy drain.

Banana muffins I made while mom was gone to use up our uber-ripe bananas.

I should also mention that at the same time, towards the end of the week, I was putting things together for Mark's birthday party, which was that Friday. Since he and his housemates are busy with school, he left it up to me to provide most of the food, which I was happy to do. I baked cookies and cupcakes, made a berry trifle, and brought over chips and paper goods. The party was an absolute blast - Mark's friends are so fun and his roommates actually got him to play beer pong (which, if you knew him, you'd understand what a big deal that is).

Chocolate chip cookies!

Sprinkle cupcakes, which were really good. I ate about six leftovers in one day. Oops.

After the party, I crashed. Aside from going to work and running errands on Tuesday, I have mostly been completely useless and unproductive since Saturday. I have gotten around to more leisurely things, like catching up on Glee, watching Up and The Bucket List using our new Netflix subscription, starting back up on my cross-stitch, and cracking open the first Harry Potter book in hopes of making my way through the series before Deathly Hallows Part 1 comes out (and realizing now that I only have two months to get through seven books... but I'm challenging myself to do it).

So that, along with copious amounts of baking, is what I've been up to. This weekend I'm visiting a friend at her apartment at grad school and hopefully getting a chance to catch up on everyone's lives, either in person or via e-mail. I can't believe it's officially fall - that totally snuck up on me - but I can't wait to start wearing scarves and indulging in Pumpkin Spice Lattes, as well as figuring out if I'll have any plans for Halloween and if so, what I should be! Oh fall, I love you so.

video friday.

My weekend kicks off in about fifteen minutes, by which I mean, that's when I'm going to hang out with my friends for an hour before they go into the city, where I will not be joining them because my body is a hot mess and I have about ten varieties of cramps, so instead I'll be coming back here and finishing my grandmother's scrapbook.

Right.

So now, I'll show you some awesometastic videos that graced my presence this week.

(I am not responsible for any pants-wetting that may have occurred during the viewing of this video.)

I may or may not have giddily jumped up and down after seeing this video. I am beyond excited and am now on a quest to re-read all of the books and re-watch all six movies before November. Which would be in progress already IF WE HADN'T MISPLACED OUR COPY OF BOOK ONE.

Everything about Maroon 5 is sexy. Including this video. If I could trade places with that girl, I would be the happiest person alive. Adam Levine is a yummy, sexy man.

NOW. Before you watch this one, let me preface it. Yes, it's a dance video. Yes, it's from So You Think You Can Dance. The dashing man with the clipboard and glasses is Twitch, who came in second place on the fourth season of the show (we're on to season seven now) and is now the male Hip Hop All-Star for this season. The kid in the jacket is ALEX FREAKIN WONG, contestant on this season and the most perfect technical dancer I've ever seen in my life. He came straight from a ballet company and has barely touched hip hop in his career. Not going to lie, as amazing as he is, I kind of expected him to bomb. HE DID THE TOTAL OPPOSITE OF BOMBING. See for yourself.

I KNOW RIGHT? Have fun picking your jaw up off the floor.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend everyone!
